Jake’s mood sunk further after the argument. It was awful to be at odds with Rick. They had been like the two musketeers. They had seen other come and go and they had comforted each other in their own ways as they remained and others left. Somehow, he had expected Rick to understand that this would be hard for him. To be left alone…to never truly be wanted….it hurt like crazy.
He was happy for Rick. He really was. He just…needed to adjust himself. And very little around him was helping him to do that. Even Miss Rosie had urged him to patch up the argument quickly. She had spoken to him sternly at being selfish. He wasn’t! He just…. He didn’t know. His school work suffered as the week wore on. Dance was mechanical and what he wanted most was to curl up in bed.
Rick on his part started to feel bad when meals were no longer livened up by Jake’s jokes and stories. A week after the argument he burst into Jake’s room. “Are you giving up?” he demanded as he pulled the bed covers back to reveal the huddled boy. “You swore you wouldn’t.”
Silence.
“JAKE!” Rick takes hold of the shoulder and turns him over. His heart beats wildly as he’s met with a blank stare. “JAKE! Talk to me!”
Silence.
“Please tell me you haven’t done something stupid?” Rick shakes him.
“Stupid?” Jake’s voice is slow and heavy. It takes a second for him to take in what Rick is asking and he blinks. “No. No I haven’t.”
Déjà vu. Except it had been reversed and Rick had been stupid. He breathes a sigh of relief. “You scared me.”
“Sorry,” Jake mumbles. “I’m just…not feeling talkative.”
“Then I will,” Rick says a little grimly. And talk he does. Promising to stay in touch. Promising they will still be friends. “I didn’t realise how much I needed you as a friend until now,” he winds up, sliding an arm around Jake’s shoulder. “You won’t be alone okay? I won’t let you. Without you….I would never have had the balls to start trusting Renn. I wouldn’t have a family without your help. You won’t die alone. I will be there. ”
He feels Jake tremble and holds him close as the tears start.
“It will be okay,” Rick promises sturdily.
